Tour Overview

The patundas trek is a 10-day expedition is a high-altitude journey through the heart of the Karakoram, often called “Table of mountains” for its 360-degree views of 7,000m peaks including Rakaposhi, Passu Cones , Shispare, and Batura. Starting from the high-altitude desert of Skardu, we drive to the lush Hunza Valley and continue to the rugged frontier of Gojal. The trek itself involves crossing the white ice of the Passu Glacier to reach the summer pastures of Patundas (4,170m). It is a trek of contrasts: from the blue waters of Borith Lake to the jagged “white cathedral” of the Passu Cones.

Trek Highlights
  • Patundas Viewpoint: A rare vantage point to see over 15 peaks above 6,000m, including Shispare, Passu Peak, and Rakaposhi.

  • Passu Glacier Crossing: A thrilling (and guided) walk across the moving ice and crevasses of the white glacier.

  • Borith Lake: A saline glacial lake where we base ourselves before the ascent.

  • Hussaini Suspension Bridge: Test your nerves on the world-famous “plank-and-cable” bridge.

  • Heritage Forts: Explore the 700-year-old Baltit and 900-year-old Altit Forts in central Hunza.

Itinerary

Day 1: Islamabad to Skardu (The Flight of a Lifetime)

Arrival in Islamabad and immediate transfer for the domestic flight to Skardu. This flight flies past Nanga Parbat and K2 (on clear days). Afternoon visit to the Shangrila Resort and Lower Kachura Lake. Overnight in Skardu.

Day 2: Skardu to Karimabad (Hunza)

A long but spectacular 6-7 hour drive. We follow the Indus River to the “Junction Point” where the three mountain ranges meet, then turn onto the KKH toward Hunza. We stop at the Rakaposhi Viewpoint before arriving in Karimabad for the night.

Day 3: Gulmit & The Road to Gojal

Drive further north to Gulmit. We visit a traditional 400-year-old Old House and the local carpet-weaving center. In the afternoon, we walk across the Hussaini Suspension Bridge before checking into our lodge at Borith Lake (2,600m).

Day 4: Hike to Passu Ghar (The Ascent Begins)

The trek starts. We hike from Borith Lake in the scenic Gojal region of Upper Hunza. Along the lateral moraine of the glacier. The first segment is crossing a glacier it might seem tough but, but you won’t need any special skill or gear. After about 4 hours of steady climbing, we reach Passu Ghar (3,210m), a shepherd’s summer settlement with spectacular view along the way and the ice below.

Overnight in tents.

Day 5: The White Glacier Crossing to Luzhdar

Today is the most technical and exciting part. We descend onto the Passu Glacier, navigating the “white ice” and avoiding crevasses under the guidance of our experts. After 4-5 hours of trekking, we reach the campsite at Luzhdar (also known as Nuzdhur). Overnight in tents.

Day 6: The Summit: Patundas Viewpoint

A steep 3-hour zig-zag climb takes us to the Patundas Plateau 4,170m, a grassy plateau at high altitude. From here, the world opens up: the Batura Glacier is on your right, the Passu Glacier on your left. This spot offers one of the most breathtaking alpine views in the Hunza region.  We spend time at the viewpoint before descending back to our base at Luzhdar.

overnight at Luzhdar

Day 7: Descent to Borith Lake

After taking in the views and snapping great photos at the Patundas meadows. We re-trace our steps, crossing the glacier once more and descending to Borith Lake. A hot meal and a soft bed at the Borith Lake Resort feel like absolute luxury after the high-altitude camping.

Overnight at Borith

Day 8: Hunza Heritage (Karimabad)

Drive back to Central Hunza. The day is dedicated to history: we visit Baltit Fort (former seat of the Mir of Hunza) and the ancient Altit Fort. Evening shopping for gemstones and local apricots in the Karimabad Bazaar.

Overnight at Karimabad Hunza

Day 9: Return Drive to Skardu

We head back down the KKH and through the Rondu Gorge to reach Skardu. Farewell dinner with the team, reflecting on the 4,000m heights we just conquered.

FAQ

Do I need a local guide for the glacier crossing?

Yes. The Passu Glacier is an “active” glacier. Its crevasses shift every season. Crossing without a local who knows the current year’s safe path is highly dangerous.

How cold does it get at Patundas?

Even in June/July, night temperatures at Luzhdar can drop to 0c to 5c . During the day, the sun reflecting off the white glacier is very intense—high SPF sunscreen is a must.

Why the fly-to-Skardu start?

While Patundas is in Hunza, starting in Skardu allows you to see the “Cold Desert” and the central Karakoram landscape before heading to the alpine meadows of Gojal.
