Passu to Batura Yashperth Trek

Trek Overview

The Passu to Batura Yashperth Trek is a 5-day immersion into the high-altitude summer pastures of Upper Hunza. Curated by Pamir Crest Adventure Tours, this route avoids the extreme technicality of high passes while delivering world-class glacial scenery. You will walk through a “granite corridor” flanked by the Shispare and Passu massifs, eventually reaching the wide, flower-strewn meadows of Yashperth where yaks graze against a backdrop of ancient ice.

Trek Highlights

  • The Batura Wall: Stand beneath a continuous 10km wall of ice and rock rising to nearly 8,000m

  • Wakhi Heritage: Visit the stone “summer houses” of the Shimshali and Passu shepherds at Kirgaswashk and Yashperth.

  • Glacial Navigation: Experience the thrill of walking alongside the massive, debris-covered Batura Glacier.

  • Futmahell Viewpoint: Reach one of the most dramatic “theaters of mountains” in the Karakoram.

  • Expert Guiding: Navigate the shifting moraine safely with the veteran crew of Karakoram Mountain Experts.

Itinerary

Day 1: Passu Village to Kirgaswashk

We depart from the iconic village of Passu after a final gear check. The trail leads us onto the lateral moraine of the Batura Glacier. We navigate a mix of rocky sections and narrow shepherd trails. As the gorge opens up, we reach Kirgaswashk, a serene pasture where we set up our first camp. The contrast between the grey glacier and the green grass is striking.

Day 2: Kirgaswashk to Yashperth

Today we push deeper into the Batura wilderness. The trail involves traversing small glacial streams and undulating moraine ridges. As we gain altitude, the air becomes crisper and the views more expansive. We arrive at Yashperth, a beautiful summer settlement nestled between the mountain wall and the glacier. The local shepherds often welcome visitors with fresh yak milk or yogurt

Day 3: Rest & Acclimatization at Yashperth

Today is designed for recovery and immersion. At Karakoram Mountain Experts, we use this day to ensure everyone is well-acclimatized for the hike to Futmahell. You can spend the day exploring traditional shepherd huts, photographing the rare flora of the high Karakoram, or simply sitting by the glacier’s edge to listen to the “groans” of the moving ice.

Day 4: Yashperth to Futmahell (The Batura Wall) & Return

The highlight of the trek. We start early to catch the morning light on the Batura Wall. The trail to Futmahell offers a breathtaking close-up of the peaks. You are now standing in front of one of the longest continuous mountain walls on earth. After a picnic lunch with views of the massive icefalls, we descend back to the comfort of our camp at Yashperth.

Day 5: Yashperth to Passu Village

The final day is a long but rewarding descent. We retrace our steps through the Batura Valley, enjoying the downward perspective of the Passu Cones. Upon arriving in Passu Village, we check into our hotel for a well-deserved hot shower. We end the day with a sunset walk through the apricot orchards of the village and a celebratory dinner.
